Introduction
As an English teacher, one of the responsibilities that I take seriously is providing constructive feedback to my students. Recently, I had to give a student a "C" grade for their performance in one of my classes. This experience was not easy for me or the student, but it was a necessary learning opportunity for both of us.
The Lecture
The class in question was about the use of idiomatic expressions in English. The student in question seemed to struggle with understanding the meaning and usage of these phrases. I noticed that during the lecture, they were not taking notes or asking questions, which raised a red flag for me.
When I asked the student if they had any questions, they appeared unsure of what to ask. From this, I gathered that they had not fully grasped the concept. As an English teacher, it is essential that I make sure my students understand what I teach them. I decided to take some extra time after class to go over the material with this student again.
The Homework
As homework, I assigned the class to write a short paragraph using at least three different idiomatic expressions. I provided them with examples, and we reviewed them in class. The student in question did not complete the assignment and did not ask for an extension, despite having plenty of opportunities to do so.
When I asked the student why they did not complete the homework, they told me that they were busy with other classes. While I understand that students have other obligations, it is important to prioritize assignments in order to succeed in the class. I reminded the student that their performance in my class was important and should not be neglected.
The Grade
After careful consideration, I had to give the student a "C" grade for their performance in the class. While I understood that the student was struggling, they did not show adequate effort to improve. This was a tough decision, but it was necessary to ensure that the student understood the importance of prioritizing assignments and seeking help when needed.
Conclusion
This experience was a valuable reminder that as a teacher, it is important to provide constructive feedback to students. Though it can be challenging, feedback helps students understand the areas they need to improve in. It also encourages them to take ownership of their learning experience and strive for success. In this case, the student realized the importance of seeking help, prioritizing assignments, and understanding the materials. In the end, the student improved and was able to receive a better grade in the class.
